Training programme “Architecture in Libya then and now – A photographic approach”
You are passionate about photography?
You enjoy exploring your environment with a camera?
You consider a career as a photographer?
You have a background in architecture?
You believe in heritage conservation?
You would like to develop your skills in the field of architectural photography?

Then apply now for the first training programm for Libyan photographers in the field of architectural photography and become part of the latest Franco-German-Libyan cultural endeavour!
Libya is not only a country with many famous heritage sights, it also offers a variety of modern architecture. However, the image of Libya in the media is often limited to very few aspects. Only a handfull of projects show a more diverse image of the country, especially through the lense of Libyan photographers.
Within the framework of the project “Architecture in Libya then and now – a photographic approach”, the Goethe-Institut and the Institut français would like to provide Libyan photographers with a platform to present new aspects of their country and to further develop their skills with the help of a German and a French photography expert.
The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach. It promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural cooperation. Furthermore, it conveys a comprehensive image of Germany by providing information about its cultural, social and political life. Activities for Libyans are managed by the Goethe-Institut in Tunis.
The Institut français is in charge of implementing France’s cultural action abroad. The creation of a common brand, “Institut français”, embracing both the Paris institution and the instituts français abroad, lends coherence and visibility to France’s cultural diplomacy. This cultural diplomacy is based on a network of 96 instituts français and more than 300 alliances françaises under contract with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs located in 161 different countries around the world.
The Franco-German Cultural Fund is an initiative which aims to support joint projects submitted by French and German diplomatic networks, in close collaboration with their local partners.
The project “Architecture in Libya then and now – A photographic approach” consists of three components:training, production and exhibition curation.
Firstly, the participants will learn more about architectural photography in a week-long training in May 2018. German and French experts will share their experiences and coach the photographers according to the respective individual needs.
During the assignment period, the participants will be requested to shoot a series of photographies dealing with the theme of the project within Libya. It is up to each participant how he or she would like to approach the topic. The German and the French expert will guide them via online coaching sessions.
In a second workshop in August 2018, the participants will select the best images and curate an exhibition with the guidance of the German and the French expert who will teach them more about curation.
It is planned to present the final exhibition in Tunisia and Libya as well as in Germany and France later in 2018 and in 2019.
