EPSRC-UKRI Innovation Fellowships

  • Note: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for this call can be found below, and also as an FAQ document in PDF format, under the "Resources" section of this page.

EPSRC is inviting Outline Proposals for EPSRC-UKRI Innovation Fellowships, with a closing date of 09 November 2017. Applications are sought in alignment with the Industrial Strategy, in areas that have been identified as relevant to EPSRC or recognised priority areas at the interface of engineering and physical science research. A list and description of these areas can be found within the call guidance.

The National Productivity Investment Fund (NPIF) has allocated £38.9 million which we expect to fund 65-85 EPSRC-UKRIInnovation Fellowship proposals. A further £1.6 million from AHRC, a minimum of £1 million from BBSRC and £0.4 million from ESRC will be available to co-fund research at specified interfaces. These aim to support excellent engineering and physical sciences research aligned to the Industrial Strategy challenges as identified by the open priority areas. Some of these fellowships may fall at the interface of disciplines and to reflect of our support of these areas EPSRC has recognised a number of Interface areas which are available to apply to.

Applications are particularly welcome from international researchers who may be designated Rutherford fellows; the Rutherford Fellowships were announced in July 2017. The Rutherford Fund will provide fellowships for researchers, from both the developed world and emerging research powerhouses like India, China, Brazil and Mexico, helping to maintain the UK's position as a world-leader in science and research.

Innovation Fellowships will nurture future leaders in both industry and the research base and promote greater mobility between them and ensure that a variety of UK industrial sectors have a supply of skilled researchers. The cohort of fellows will develop their leadership experience, entrepreneurial and enterprise skills in a crucial phase of their careers as they establish themselves and develop beyond post-doctoral and early career work.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

(Please note: further FAQs can be found under the "Resources" section of this page.)

Q: What attachments in Je-S should be included for this call?

A: This is a call for outlines rather than the standard Fellowship process so the instructions for the call need to be followed: all parts of the Outline proposal (Case for Support, CV, Justification of resources and Statement from Host Organisation) should be attached.

Q: How should I structure the Case for Support?

A: The four pages are freeform and it is part of the assessment to see if they are used appropriately to describe the candidate's particular research, why they are the right person to do it and how they will exhibit the qualities required by a Fellow. A good way to structure the proposal is to use the assessment criteria and bear in mind that the Candidate and the Research are the most important criteria. A letter from the Host Organisation describing the process by which you were identified and how this process works with current equality, diversity and inclusion policy must be included, if it is not then your Outline proposal will be office rejected.

Q: If I am rejected at the Outline stage will I still be eligible to apply for other EPSRCfellowships?

A: Yes, you can only submit a full fellowship proposal once within 12 months but if you are rejected at the Outline stage this will not count towards the number of full fellowship proposals submitted.
