Sharara oil field resumes production and NOC commits to prosecute offenders.

The National Oil Corporation confirms the resumption of production at Sharara oil field after a suspension of 24 hours that resulted in nearly half a million barrels of lost production, estimated at a cost of USD30 million. The oil field had been suspended on March 4, due to the illegal closure of a valve on the Sharara-Zawiya pipeline.
The NOC confirms its commitment to sue the perpetrator of this closure - an individual named Hassan Mohammed Juili - due to these significant damages. Furthermore NOC strongly refutes Mr Juili’s serious allegations of NOC-caused pollution as entirely false. NOC contacted the tribal leaders and local assembly and Zintan Airport Brigade who also denounced and condemned this criminal action.
Mr. Mustafa Sanalla, Chairman of the NOC, commented:
“We can confirm the perpetrator will be prosecuted fully under Libyan law and justice will be done. Such closures and attempts at blackmail are not fit for our times. NOC remains the guardian of Libya’s oil wealth and will not bargain for it.”
Mr Juili has publicly admitted his responsibility for the closure, seen as an attempt to extort a works contract for himself to clean the land. It is noted that the same man tampered with the valve last year, again as a means of extortion. Mr Juili used a stolen gear box to create yesterday’s stoppage.
Mr Sanalla added:
“Our employees’ bravery and work-rate has brought production back on line very quickly – so I thank them, and also the Airport Brigade for support and security offered during this maintenance work.”
NOC stresses its commitment to supporting local communities across the country facing problems and challenges, and its refusal to work or negotiate with anyone who threatens to tamper with the substance of Libya’s future.
