GECOL in talks with South Korean companies over stalled projects.

A delegation from the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) has arrived in Seoul for talks on the return of South Korean companies and resumption of the stalled projects in Libya.

The delegation, headed by chairman of the steering committee of GECOL Abdul-Majeed Hamza, started the visit with a meeting with Kim Kyung-hwan, Vice Minister of Land and Infrastructure at the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, on Wednesday.

“Both sides discussed return of SK companies, security situations here in addition to other legal and financial matters,” the GECOL reported.

They also discussed the possibility to lift the travel ban imposed by the South Korean government on the South Korean companies in order to facilitate their return.

During the visit, the delegation also met with the managers of Doosan Group, Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co, and Daewoo Engineering & Construction to discuss resumption of construction works at three main power plants in Libya including: Zuwetina, western Tripoli, and Al-Khalij.

The General Electricity Company described the visit as fruitful and said a roadmap for the return of South Korean companies was prepared.

Hyundai and Doosan halted construction works on Al-Khalij oil-fired plant in Sirte in 2014. Around 570 of Hyundai’s foreign workers and 382 from Doosan left the region due to unrest.

Earlier this year, GECOL announced the return of Turkey’s ENKA Teknik to restart work on Ubari power station in south Libya.
