International Medical Corps (Consultant: Reproductive Health Specialist Trainer)

Essential Job Duties/Scope of Work:


International Medical Corps has been operating in Libya since February 2011. Initial work included emergency medical surgical teams, distribution of non-food items, mental health and psychosocial programming and support to physical rehabilitation services. In the years since the revolution, International Medical Corps concentrated on health programming and medical capacity building, in coordination with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Social Affairs. Since the start of the recent conflict in mid-2014, International Medical Corps has continued its work with migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, both in the community and in the detention centers located throughout the country.

As of November 2016, International Medical Corps has offices in Tripoli, Misrata, Benghazi and Sabha. With support from donors, International Medical Corps is currently implementing short-term emergency programs focusing on meeting the basic health care needs of internally displaced persons and persons of concern (undocumented migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees) working through partners and with local staff.

Purpose: The Reproductive Health Specialist Consultant will serve as the Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) and Clinical Management of Rape (CMR) trainer in Tripoli, Libya. S/He will provide three days of theoretical and three days of practical training to physicians in Ministry of Health Facilities.


Task Description:

    1. Review IMC assessment report of targeted health facility staff and liaise with country team to gather and document information for program planning in coordination with the IMC technical unit (public health and sexual and reproductive health advisors).

    1. Develop BEmONC and CMR training materials (manuals, schedule, pre-test, post-test and evaluation questions) and tools based on global and/or national guidelines and adapted to the local context and needs.

    1. Provide training in the identification, management and referral for selected priority cases for secondary healthcare facilities.

    1. Coordinate with National Medical Coordinator as well as the Ministry of Health (MoH) in selecting participants.

    1. Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings and case discussions

    1. Support the integration of reproductive health services at various IMC community development centers as well as mobile medical units.

    1. Provide support and advice for selection, distribution, use and tracking of medication, including PEP.

    1. Support the development and implementation of appropriate referral pathways to higher level specialized health care.

    1. Liaise with IMC technical unit team in developing and implement all training plans, tools, and reports.

    1. Liaise with the National Medical coordinator as well as the MoH in assessing two Hospitals for use as BEmONC clinical practicum sites that can provide better real-world experiences for students.

    1. Develop power point for the training.

    1. Share the schedule of the training with National Medical Coordinator and program department

    1. Facilitate six day training for the BEmONC (including the practical part) and three-day training for CMR.

    1. Correct the pre and post-tests

    1. Sign and stamp training certificates

    1. The consultant will provide International Medical Corps with a training report that includes the pre and post-test results of the course. 

Qualifications and Experience

    • Experience in providing BEmONC & CMR trainings.

    • Holds a degree in medicine with specialization in obstetric and holds current license/registration to practice

    • Has a minimum 3 years clinical experience in a hospital providing emergency obstetric services

    • Experience with survivors of GBV, and of sexual violence in particular

    • Experience of developing training materials

    • Experience and skills in training medical professionals and non-professionals

    • Strong organizational and supervisory skills.

    • Experience of advocacy / engagement with government and non-governmental organisations

    • Committed to working in a team, and prioritizing development of other team members’ capacity

    • Strong interpersonal skills and able to work and lead individuals as a team

    • Diplomatic and able to network and build good working relationships

    • Willingness to travel,  in extremely insecure and  difficult circumstances

    • Can cope with stressful workloads and working with limited resources.

    • A good command of verbal and written English, Arabic a must

  • Experience on reporting of trainings
